What is genetic counseling?

Genetic counseling is a specialized field of healthcare that involves providing information and support to individuals or families who have a chance to have, or are already affected by genetic conditions. Genetic counselors are trained healthcare professionals who have expertise in medical genetics and counseling techniques.

What is the purpose of genetic counseling?

The primary purpose of genetic counseling is to help individuals and families understand the genetic factors that contribute to their health conditions. Genetic counseling may also help with understanding the chance that other family members may have a certain genetic condition and provide support and guidance as individuals and families navigate the complex world of genetic conditions.

What to expect at a genetic counseling appointment?

A genetic counseling appointment offers personalized support and information regarding inherited conditions and genetic health. A genetic counselor and a geneticist will review your medical history, gather a family history, explain the role of genetics related to your health, discuss testing options, and help you interpret your genetic testing results.

The appointment is to help you make informed decisions regarding your health and deepen your understanding of your genetic risk. We may provide available resources/referrals for managing genetic conditions.

Why is genetic counseling important?

Genetic counseling helps individuals, and their families understand their genetic risks and make informed decisions about their health. By reviewing personal and family medical histories, genetic counselors can identify patterns or indications of inherited conditions, allowing for early detection and intervention. They also provide education and guidance on available genetic testing options, helping individuals understand the benefits, limitations, and implications of such tests. If a genetic variation (mutation) is identified through testing, this can better inform your current management and medication regimen.

Genetic counseling also offers emotional support, addresses psychological and social aspects, and assists in navigating the complex landscape of genetic health. Ultimately, genetic counseling empowers individuals to take control of and make proactive choices regarding their genetic health.

Is genetic counseling covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans will cover a consultation with a genetics provider. Some insurance plans may fully cover genetic counseling, while others may require co-payments, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket expenses. Coverage can also be influenced by the purpose of genetic counseling. Typically, insurance plans provide coverage for genetic counseling related to a specific medical condition or if it is deemed medically necessary.
