COVID-19 Vaccines & Allergic Reactions

Following reports of patients experiencing severe allergic reactions after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its guidance concerning听patients with听allergies,听补苍诲听allergic reactions to the vaccines.

Even people with a history of severe allergic reactions听not听related to vaccines or injectable medications (including food, pet, venom, environmental, or latex allergies), should be vaccinated,听听say,听as should those with 鈥渁 history of allergies to oral medications or a family history of severe allergic reactions.鈥

Considerations Before Receiving the Vaccine

The vast majority of people鈥攅ven those听with a history of allergiescan receive the vaccine safely, says听infectious disease expert Kristen Marks, MD,听associate professor of medicine-Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University.

鈥淯ntil we have more information, those with a history of a severe allergic reaction like anaphylaxis to any vaccine to any vaccine or injectable medicine should be cautious about getting the vaccine,鈥 Dr. Marks explains. 鈥淚f that applies to you, discuss with your provider to decide how to proceed.鈥

Possible Allergic Reactions to Vaccine Ingredient

听advised that patients who are allergic to a substance called polyethylene glycol (PEG),听or a related substance called polysorbate,听not听get the COVID-19 vaccine:鈥淧olysorbate is not an ingredient in either mRNA COVID-19 vaccine but is closely related to PEG, which is in the vaccines.

In addition, the听CDCrecommends that providers observe听all patients should be observed for 15 to 30 minutes after they receive the vaccine, and听have emergency medicines and equipmenton hand听to听rapidly manage听allergicreactions.

If a patient experiences听an allergic reaction to the vaccine,听the provider听will send a report to the听听(VAERS), a national system that compiles reports about vaccine reactions from healthcare professionals, vaccine manufacturers, and the public.
