If you鈥檙e like many Americans, summer is the season to fire up the grill and enjoy backyard barbecues. While this is one of the best parts of summer for many, it also comes with safety hazards. The National Fire Protection Association estimates that approximately 10,600 home fires are caused by grills every year, and nearly 20,000 people go to the emergency room for burn injuries resulting from a grill.听听

What to Do if You Burn Yourself听

Run the affected area under cool running water for at least 10 minutes to help decrease the progression of the injury. Ice is not a good idea, because it can drop the temperature of the skin too much, causing blood flow to that area to stop.鈥听
If the burn does not appear serious, the next steps include applying petroleum jelly two to three times daily and keeping it covered with a nonstick, sterile bandage. Taking over-the-counter acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help minimize pain.听
But how do you know when a burn requires medical attention? Dr. Chang recommends going to the emergency room if:听
- A burn covers a large area, such as your entire forearm or all the way around your leg听
- You burn a sensitive area such as your face or feet听
- The burn has a black or leathery appearance听
It鈥檚 also important to be on the lookout for signs of infection. Blisters are normal for second-degree burns. But if you notice increased redness or pain or have a fever or decreased appetite, seek medical attention as soon as possible.听听

Whether you use a charcoal or propane grill, remember to follow guidelines to . Follow these tips:听听
- Only use the grill outdoors and at a safe distance away from the house, deck railings and overhanging branches.听
- Make sure children and pets stay at least three feet away from the grill.听
- Open the lid of a gas grill before you light it.听
- Regularly remove fat or grease buildup from the grill grates and the tray below.听
- For a charcoal grill, use only starter fluid made for charcoal, and make sure the coals are completely cooled before disposing them in a metal container.听
- For a propane grill, if the flame goes out after lighting, turn both the grill knobs and the gas off and wait at least five minutes before trying again.听
