The list of diseases that are preventable with vaccines is a long one. It includes polio, whooping cough, typhoid fever, measles, diphtheria and tetanus, among many others. These diseases have been mostly eliminated in the U.S., thanks to the development of highly effective vaccines over the past 70 years.

For children, tweens and teens, anxiety comes in many forms. Very young children may have a hard time separating from their parents or caregivers. School-aged children—especially those transitioning to a new school—may not know where to go on their first day, much less whether they’ll have any friends. And tweens and teens may feel self-conscious about changes in their bodies.

In the world of pediatric care, a well visit is the equivalent of what used to be called a check-up or a physical. Once a year, parents typically make an appointment for a well visit with their family physician or pediatrician to make sure all’s well with their child and to voice any concerns. For children 3 and under, though, visits are as frequent as every few weeks in the newborn period to every 2 to 6 months. Well visits are a must for infants, toddlers, school-age children and teens alike.
