The Rogosin Institute’s lipid program, the Maurice R. Greenberg Comprehensive Lipid Control Center, is one of the country’s preeminent research and treatment programs focused on cholesterol control.

Lipid Disorders – Pediatric

The CLCC Pediatric Lipid Control Center, established in 1989, provides diagnostic evaluation and therapy for children with lipid disorders.

The emphasis of the pediatric program is education in diet and exercise. Medications are used only when diet and exercise are not effective. Parents are encouraged to participate and are essential in the treatment of younger children.

Pediatric Patients Of The CLCC Receive:

First Visit (2 Hours):

  • Comprehensive medical history and physician exam by a pediatric lipid expert
  • Interpretation of fasting lipid profile and recommendations for additional testing such as lipoprotein (a), apolipoprotein B and carotid wall thickness by ultrasound
  • Comprehensive dietary analysis and individualized dietary instruction by a registered dietitian with over 20 years experience in the treatment of lipid disorders in children as well as adults. This includes the use of safe, over-the-counter supplements such as plant soluble fiber (psyllium) and plant sterols.
  • Children with the rare genetic disorder, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, may be referred to discuss specialized therapy available at The Rogosin Institute, such as LDL-apheresis and liver transplant.

Follow-up visits (45 minutes):

  • Weight, height, blood pressure
  • Review of repeat fasting lipid profiles and other tests
  • Review of changes in general health, diet and physical activity by our pediatrician and dietitian
  • Usually after 6 months, if the lipid levels are still very abnormal, discussion and prescription of cholesterol and/or triglyceride lowering medication.

Lipid Disorders – Adult

Our adult program focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cholesterol and triglyceride disorders to prevent heart disease and stroke or reverse existing arterial disease.
Optimal therapy for cholesterol-related diseases is based on establishing a favorable ratio between LDL, which promotes cholesterol deposits and HDL, which promotes the removal of cholesterol. Individualized treatment at the CLCC may include diet and exercise modification, lipid-lowering medication, and, when necessary, referral for surgical therapy or .

Patients Of The CLCC Receive:

  • Comprehensive medical history and physician exam by a lipid expert
  • Interpretation of the fasting lipid profile and recommendations for additional testing such as lipoprotein (a), apololipoprotein B and carotid wall thickness by ultrasound (IMT)
  • Comprehensive dietary analysis and individualized dietary instruction by a registered dietitian with over 20 years experience in the treatment of lipid disorders, diabetes and weight control
  • Supervised cholesterol and triglyceride lowering medicines, if needed
