Our mission is to provide top quality care for all injured patients, both in our community and the broader region. We are ready — around the clock — to provide immediate life saving care for patients suffering severe injury with the highest level of expertise, compassion and resources. Our goal is not only to save lives, but also to provide definitive care to restore function and return patients to their normal lives.

As a verified Level I trauma center, we provide the most advanced resources and the most highly skilled providers and we are ready to diagnose and treat the full range of injuries from the most urgently life threatening to less severe injuries that affect function and quality of life. Led by Dr. Robert J. Winchell, a nationally renowned expert in care for the critically injured, our team of surgeons, physicians and nurses has earned a reputation of providing outstanding care for patients and their loved ones.

Patient transfers: In addition to providing care within our immediate vicinity, as a Level I trauma center we are committed to providing top level care to injured patients throughout the New York City area and beyond. We accept transfer of critically injured patients and those with complex injuries who have been initially treated at other facilities. Physicians who wish to transfer a patient should call the NewYork-Presbyterian transfer center at 1-800-NYP-STAT (1-800-697-7828).

Exceptional Resources for Trauma Care

We have the largest private EMS (emergency medical service) in the region, providing emergency response through the 911 system, as well as inter facility transfers including specialty critical care transfers.

As soon as we learn that a patient needs care for a serious injury, we assemble a highly trained trauma team to treat immediately life-threatening problems, such as significant bleeding, head injury, injury to internal organs and major pelvic fractures. After initial stabilization, the team works to ensure timely diagnosis of all other potential problems and provide the definitive care needed.

Our multidisciplinary team provides surgical care for all types of injuries, across a comprehensive range of sub-specialties using the most advanced technology and techniques available. Our trauma and critical care surgeons are nationally recognized experts, specially trained to coordinate care for the most complex patients including those with multiple organ system injuries.

Compassionate Care to Save and Restore Lives

Our team provides the highest level of skill and expertise to save lives after the most severe injury or illness, recovery is not complete until our patients have returned to optimal function. From the moment the patient enters the trauma bay, our team is also working to understand the patient as a unique individual and to begin the steps necessary to optimize comfort and facilitate reentry into society. This includes integrating the family in the process of care and rehabilitation. Our surgeons and other specialists collaborate to promote the best possible recovery, rehabilitation to live fully after recovery from serious injury. We are committed to ongoing communication, collaboration and shared decision making.
